Fire Prevention

I'm Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey, and it is my privilege to serve as your State Fire Marshal.

At the Office of State Fire Marshal we are passionate about preventing fires and saving lives. It is our duty to educate North Carolinians about fire safety and provide resources statewide.

Fire safety starts with smoke alarms.

Did you know three out of five home fire deaths happen from fires in homes with no smoke alarms?

If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half! That is why I need your help!

2018 was the deadliest year on record for fire deaths in North Carolina with 135 people losing their lives because of fire. Many of those fires could have been prevented and more importantly, many of those lives could have been spared, if working smoke alarms had been present.

This year, the theme of Fire Prevention Week 2019 is "Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!" The goal is to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

I hope you use this website to brush up on fire safety and prevention knowledge, as well as share the information so that we can prevent fires and save lives. Feel free to download any of these resources and use them in your own home, school or community. Thank you for visiting this site and for helping keep your family, friends and neighbors safe!
